April 11, 1991. Galileo is well past Earth when the command goes up to unfurl its main antenna, and the thing opens partway. A few ribs are stuck fast, most likely from four years riding around on trucks. The link drops from 134 kilobits per second to about 10 bits. JPL spent three years writing new flight software to squeeze the science down small enough to fit through the spare antenna. It worked.
