Return how many whole years separate a hire year and a current year, both written with two digits.
January 1, 2000. Payroll systems that had stored the year as two digits since the seventies work out length of service as 00 minus 65, and hand a thirty five year veteran a record showing minus sixty five. The cheap fix nearly everyone shipped was a window: a two digit year under 50 means twenty something, the rest mean nineteen something. It bought another few decades. That window is still running in production somewhere near you.
